The Battle To Beat Malaria – Behind the Scenes

A short glimpse behind the scenes into the macro mosquito shoot especially commissioned for the BBC/PBS NOVA/Arte documentary ‘The Battle To Beat Malaria’ Produced by Wingspan Productions.

Working with the team at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and an expert macro-filming crew, we documented in great detail the Anopheles mosquito, one of the dominant malaria-carrying mosquitos in East Africa. Capturing behaviours such as blood feeding, taking off and static flying, as well as stunning portraiture.

During the 5-day macro shoot, I interviewed crew members, captured GVs of the process and then worked with an editor to produce this short accompanying piece.

Mattia Serra – Organizing Chaos

Mattia was drawn to mathematics as something elegant, inarguable, and capable of concisely representing pretty much anything. He works with ‘chaotic systems’, and used his research to predict where the Coast Guard should search for people lost at sea based on mathematical patterns of the ocean surface velocity.

The Adventurists – TV Series, in the making…

From 2016 - 2018 I travelled the globe as a field-producer filming several documentary series about the participants taking on The Adventurists and the bizarre overland endurance challenges they have thought up. From the Himalayas, to the Gobi desert, I have captured the unconventional escapades of the The Mongol Rally, The Mongol Derby, The Rickshaw Run and The Monkey Run to name a few. Not yet aired, these TV series are still in the post-production phases but below are two promotional videos to give an idea of what these adventures are all about.

The Mongol Derby: An equestrian endurance race that extends 1000 km through the Mongolian Steppe and is known as the world's longest horse race. The course recreates the horse messenger system developed by Genghis Khan in 1224.

The Rickshaw Run – Sri Lanka: A journey through the heart of Sri Lanka in a rickshaw – participants take on wild elephants, jungle tracks and mountain scenery in a beautiful landscape peppered with the crumbling remnants of past kingdoms.
